IT may be four months away but Ride for Youth cyclists have already covered more than 1200km in training for the 700km ride that raises money for Youth Focus.

On Thursday morning, peloton four was in Kings Park doing strength training under the watchful eye of coach Mark Pugsley.

The Floreat resident is about to embark on his eighth ride.

“If it’s your first ride the beginning of the training is hard but most people will be riding all the time,” Mr Pugsley said.

“Some beginners start training eight weeks before official training begins.

“Getting up in the morning when it’s cold and dark is the hardest bit.”

Riders will cover about 7000km in the lead up to the March 26-30 event, training three times a week with a double ride one weekend a month to prepare them for back-to-back rides on the four-and-a-half day fundraising event.

Karen Brown is taking part in Ride for Youth for the third time and had just covered 28km in Kings Park when Community News caught up to her.

“Everyone liked Kings Park until they took up cycling,” she said.
