A NEW marketing division focusing on destination marketing has helped the Rottnest Island Authority (RIA) win a gold medal at the recent WA Tourism Awards, according to RIA chief executive Paolo Amaranti.

The RIA won the Major Tourist Attractions category at Crown Perth on Saturday, October 25 after winning the category in 2011 and 2012 and bronze last year.

‘From winning bronze (last year) to now, we have started to focus on increasing the visitor experience and ensuring our visitors are king,’ Mr Amaranti said. ‘We have segways on the island, the water park, the golf course…we’ve increased the number of activities.’

Mr Amaranti said the RIA had downsized in some areas ‘back of house’ so it could improve service at the ‘front of house’.

He said the authority had a bigger budget this year.

‘It takes a lot of work from my staff,’ Mr Amaranti said.

‘The beauty of an award from my perspective is I don’t expect to win but I expect us to participate.

‘We didn’t win in the early years but we were participating.

‘It took us 10 years to win gold.’
