AAPWestern Suburbs Weekly

RUSSELL Crowe was not at the Golden Globes to pick up his award but used his victory speech to declare the Australian bushfires are the result of climate change.

The audience at the Globes, underway in Beverly Hills, was told Crowe was in Australia protecting his family from the bushfires.

Crowe won on Sunday for his performance as infamous former FOX News boss Roger Ailes in the TV mini-series The Loudest Voice.

Jennifer Aniston, who presented the best actor in a TV limited series or movie award, read the speech.

“Make no mistake the tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate change based,” Aniston, reading the speech, said.

“We need to act based on science, move our workforce to renewable energy and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place it is.

“That way we all will have a future.”

The actor’s Nana Glen property near Coffs Harbour in New South Wales was affected by bushfires in November.

Crowe was nominated in the limited series or TV movie best actor category against Sacha Baron Cohen (The Spy), Sam Rockwell (Fosse/Verdon), Christopher Abbott (Catch-22) and Jared Harris (Chernobyl).

Meanwhile host Ricky Gervais has lived up to expectations, taking caustic shots at Leonard DiCaprio, Felicity Huffman, James Corden and drawing gasps with a joke about Dame Judi Dench in Cats.
