Chief executive Alan Brien said the board calculated that the design, construction and full fit-out of Scitech was beyond the capability and financial resources of the not-for-profit organisation.
‘The board has appreciated the opportunity to consider a relocation of Scitech to Burswood as it clearly shows that the State Government supports and values the positive impact Scitech has on the WA community,’ Mr Brien said.
‘Looking ahead, the board have sought the Premier’s support for a short-term business case to address current space limitations at City West, while also providing alternative long-term options that would secure a purpose-built facility for Perth’s world-class science centre.’
Premier Colin Barnett told a budget estimate’s hearing last week that the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority was exploring several sites owned by the Government that might be made available for Scitech and the Government’s offer of $15 million to develop a site remained.
During last year’s State election, the Liberals promised to move Scitech from the City West exhibition centre to alongside the Perth Stadium for a 2018 opening date.
