Brother and sister team Owen Williams, of West Leederville, and Belinda Hill launched their tour business last week based outside the Swan Bell Tower.

It is the first business in WA to offer tours on Segways, two- wheel electric vehicles, offering routes alongside the riverfront.

Mr Williams said he first saw the potential for Perth Segway tours after trying one out in 2004 in Washington DC.

He then started distributing Segways to private investors, but had to wait until this year to start the tour company when the State Government changed legislation to allow the vehicles in public.

The first three routes are along the northern foreshore, but Mr Williams and Ms Hill have bigger plans.

‘Ideally I would love to do a full lap of the river and hopefully move into Kings Park,’ Mr Williams said. ‘We are also in the final stages of negotiations to set up on Rottnest Island.’

About 20 vehicles have started cruising along the foreshore, with another 10 expected to add to that fleet. The Rottnest Island fleet will consist of 30.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said it wasa good tourism initiative.

‘It is as simple as going on a walk in the park without doing the walking,’ she said.
