Seniors get invaluable tips on cyber safety

Staff ReporterWestern Suburbs Weekly

‘I did it because things flash up on computers, like virus messages, and I wanted to know if I protected my computer daily, weekly or monthly because I had no idea,’ Anita Norris, of Mosman Park said.

Seniors were told how to socialise, shop, bank and do business with computers and on the internet, while keeping personal and financial information secure.

Tips included updating security software, using different passwords for different uses and researching suppliers and using a safe payment method when buying online.

Attendees were also told to regularly check their computer privacy settings on social network sites, to think before posting photos or financial information online and to only download mobile phone ‘apps’ from reputable publishers.

Mrs Norris said she would now take care with her passwords when banking online, would be careful when using Yahoo, G-mail and Hotmail and now had knowledge of social media such as Twitter and Facebook.

Mosman Park senior Janine Roberts said she was now less scared about using the internet thanks to the session.

‘And I’ll be more careful with my credit cards and delete more emails,’ she said.
