SHENTON Park Playgroup is now home to three bright, bold, flora and flora-themed murals created by Year Seven and Eight art students from Shenton College.

Shenton College Visual Arts teacher Elena Bollweg said about 200 students helped design and hand paint three murals in three weeks.

“We had the mural boards laid out in the art room throughout the entire process and encouraged every student to have a paint,” she said.

“It was a great learning opportunity for the students to experience working on such a large scale because it illustrated the role of art in the community and brought them all together to work collaboratively.”

The art collaboration, funded through a City of Subiaco community development grant, was inspired by local mural artist Melski McVee, and her community-centred approach to mural projects.

“We actually had her visit Shenton College and give a presentation to all of our Year Seven and Eight art students in semester two to ignite their interest and understanding of how Art fits into and enhances the community,” Ms Bollweg said.

Ms Bollweg said the project was a co-curricular activity for students.

Shenton Park Playgroup will host a family fun open day on March 9 where anyone will have the opportunity to view the murals.
