Shenton Park parking woes to be eased after City of Subiaco approves changes

Jessica WarrinerWestern Suburbs Weekly

PARKING woes in Shenton Park caused by an elected member’s motion at council are set to be eased.

Subiaco Mayor Penny Taylor said it was clear there had been unintended consequences on Hilda Street and Violet Grove since the change to ‘permit only’ parking in September 2017 before she joined the council.

“The implementation of this new parking scheme has generated significant response from affected residents, many of whom have noted that the resident only restriction negatively impacts upon their standard of life and sense of community,” she said.

“Many residents also expressed their dissatisfaction that no consultation was conducted prior to the new scheme being introduced.”

Council voted 8-4 for Councillor Jodi Mansfield’s alternative recommendation to change the scheme to a two hour time restriction 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday on Violet Grove and the eastern side of Hilda Street, and permit holder only on the western side of Hilda Street.

This will come in to effect from March 1.

Cr Mansfield said the results from a recent survey indicated this would be the best way forward for the respective streets.

Last year’s elected member’s motion altering the parking on Violet Grove and Hilda Street to ‘permit only’ seven days a week was moved by Cr Scott Arbuckle, who is no longer in council, and seconded by Cr Julie Matheson.

Cr Arbuckle said in September that residents had been requesting action on the streets for some time, and the measure would provide some relief while a full study was completed.

The executive summary on the matter from last week’s council meeting said there was a risk of unintended consequences and flow on effects from “continued ad hoc scheme amendments”, and a risk of damage to the City’s reputation if action was not taken in response to the community’s views.

The new parking schemes will stay in place for at least 12 months unless reconsidered as part of the Shenton Park Precinct Parking Plan.
