Subiaco: Juanita’s owner Murray Gill to bring fish and chip shop to Rokeby Road strip

Lisa ThomasWestern Suburbs Weekly

SUBIACO artist and bar owner Murray Gill will bring back old-fashioned fish and chips when he opens the upmarket Mister Gill’s Fish and Chip Bar on Rokeby Road.

Mr Gill said the new venture, which is due to open in the next two months at the former Chokeby Road site, would combine two things he loves; wine and seafood.

He said his bar Juanita’s had experienced so much success, and a fish and chip bar was unlike anything currently offered in Subiaco.

“I like business and not only that, but a lot of people, including myself, have a soft spot for fish and chips,” he said.

“WA has a lot of great fish. It’s a special and limited commodity.”

Mr Gill said the new bar would offer a bigger menu than Juanita’s, and would feature some of his wife’s delicious seafood cooking.

He said fresh crusty bread, in-season whiting and dhufish, garlic clams and chilli muscles would feature on the menu, while magazines and a jukebox would keep a traditional fish and chip shop feel.

“The restaurant will offer dine-in and takeaway, and will cater to the entire family, as well as Friday night cocktails for the young and beautiful people,” he said.

Mr Gill said Subiaco got a lot of “stupid criticism” and he had seen several positive changes since opening Juanita’s five years ago.

“I’m very happy here, I think there are problems in Subiaco, but nothing different from any other retail area,” he said.

“I believe in this area. We are in a beautiful place, near Kings Park and eight minutes to the beach; there’s a lot to be happy about.”

Mr Gill said he believed the new bar would help revitalise Rokeby Road and would offer a retro vibe.

“I know retro, I grew up then and I know good fish and chips,” he said.

“I think this bar will revitalise the strip, a lot like Juanita’s has done. One business can encourage a lot of growth.”
