Subiaco Pavilion Market site a blight says councillor

“It has been spoiling the ambience of this area,” he said.

“There is absolutely no reason why it could not serve as some use to the community, and indeed the developer.”

Council debated an officer report that Mayor Heather Henderson and chief executive Don Burnett “finalise and execute” a legal agreement with the Pavilion Market site owner and developer in preparation for landscaping works on Seddon Street.

Cr Arbuckle moved an amendment that staff produce a condition report of the market buildings and investigate “any options to improve the site and/or facilitate interim uses” prior to the new development commencing.

“This is the subject of a separate elected member’s motion,” Cr Lynley Hewett said.

“We need a second item and a second report.”

Cr Arbuckle then withdrew his amendment.

Cr Stephanie Stroud said it was a “curious thing” that the Pavilion Market site was not allowed to continue its run as a market in the years since it was sold.

“The City of Subiaco even approached the developer to reopen them at our cost, and the owner said no,” Cr Stroud said.

She said its closure affected Subiaco’s business community.

Council voted 9-1 to carry the staff recommendation.
