KINGS Park has been closed by the Botanic Gardens and Parks authority after a large bushfire swept through the area.

Roads in and around the park remain closed after a fire overnight flared dangerously out of control for several hours.

The fire had been contained, but not controlled, with the threat level to people living in an area bounded by Thomas Street, Aberdare Road, Nicholson Road, Railway Road and Railway Parade downgraded at 7am.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said there was no longer a threat to lives or homes, but a lot of smoke remains in the area.

There are reports of traffic snarls in the area with a number of important routes closed, including Thomas Street in both directions between Rokeby Road and Kings Park Road.

The left lane of Kings Park Road is closed for westbound traffic between Fraser Avenue and Thomas Street, Fraser Avenue is closed both directions at Kings Park Road, as are the intersections of Forrest Drive and Park Avenue and Park Avenue and Pool Avenue.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully due to smoke.

Kings Park itself is also closed to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians as 40 firefighters continue to work to put out the blaze, which started just after midnight and has burnt through 4ha of bushland.

The cause of the fire, which started near the intersection of Kings Park Road and Kulinga Grove in West Perth, is considered to be suspicious.
