“We have close to 40 bookings tonight,” he said.

“We’re expecting a big walk-in crowd as well.

“It’s about giving something completely different that makes people jump.”

Joel Steinberg, also a co-owner of The Vic, said the hotel wasn’t just aiming to get more people in to the area, but entice people who live nearby to come out.

“There’s not a suburb in any major city in the world that’s 900m from the city that doesn’t thrive,” he said.

“It’s due for a resurgence.”

The new edition of The Vic has been open for a month, and Mr Steinberg said visitors had remarked on the different vibe around the hotel after the change of hands.

“The previous owners turned it into a cash dump and didn’t care about anything but the football,” Mr Steinberg said.

“We reckon that a place like this needs people who are around to recognise you when you come in, know where you like to sit.”

Mr Marwick said they’d seen a good response from increased activity on social media and regular events.

“It’s very exciting, there’s new things every day,” he said.

Mr Steinberg said there were big plans for the future of The Vic, with an outdoor cinema proposed, Providore-style area with homemade cured meats and more, and a barbecue outside in the summer.
