Laura PondWestern Suburbs Weekly

THE annual youth Groundswell Festival is expanding to make this year’s its biggest yet.

Scarborough Beach will come alive with surfing, skateboarding, basketball, music, arts, markets and entertainment on October 5 and 6.

Basketball WA has partnered with festival organisers for the inaugural 3×3 basketball Big Hustle competition, with winners qualifying for the national event.

On the water, surfers will battle it out in the Surf Boardroom Surf League and amateur surf comp, while some of Perth’s best skateboarders will show their stuff in the bowl competition.

Skateboarding WA will also be running clinics for people wanting to learn to skateboard or improve their skills.

Founder Derek Gerrard said support from Scarborough Beach Association, City of Stirling and key sponsors enabled the event to extend to two days with the additions of basketball, music and markets.

“It’s going to be an epic weekend and such a great chance for our community to gather together,” he said.

The festival village is set to buzz with free activities including tarp surfing, beach games, DJs, pop-up market stalls, photography exhibition and a range of food and drink vendors.

Competition winners will receive trophies specially made for the event by Stirling Community Men’s Shed.

Groundswell Festival runs from 7.30am to 6pm both days; visit the website for competition details.
