SUBIACO-based Telethon Kids Institute will participate in a world-leading international convention on immunology thanks to the sponsorship of the Perth Convention Bureau through the Aspire Award program.

Associate Professor Anthony Kicic, who works as an associate Principal Investigator at the Telethon Kids Institute, will be attending the Mucosal Immunology International Scientific Symposium.

Prof Kicic’s research centres on the belief there is an urgent need for new areas of drug discovery in both asthma and cystic fibrosis that are effective in young children, relatively inexpensive, and safe.

His group’s research, which focuses on a new target – the airway epithelium, early in life and on intervention – aims to make life long improvements in children with chronic airway diseases.

The conference, co-ordinated by the Society of Mucosal Immunology, brings together more than 700 scientists from around the world with the common research interest in the area of mucosal immunology.

The society advocates to “advance research, literary and educational aspects of the scientific field of mucosal immunology and to stimulate interactions among members of diverse disciplinary interests and expertise within mucosal immunology who are dispersed around the world”.

The conference provides a great opportunity for Prof Kicic not only to collaborate with fellow colleagues with similar research interests, but also to interact, consult and broaden links with other researchers with an interest in mucosa.

It is hoped an Australian-based conference in the future will expose the next generation of local researchers in the area to the internationally recognised work being conducted.
