THE number one entry for a Lonely Planet’s best travel destinations list has been nabbed by a West Australian region known for its wineries and coastline.

Lonely Planet’s ‘Best in Asia Pacific’ list for 2019 was expanded this year to include Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, with the 10 best destinations revealed.

Margaret River and Southern WA topped the list thanks to the beaches, long-stretched coastline, award-winning wineries, breweries and restaurants and ‘kangaroo-dotted’ farmland.

The global travel industry credited food festivals including Margaret River Gourmet Escape and Truffle Kerfuffle as its reasons for giving the first spot to the WA region.

In addition to the scenery and food festivals, Lonely Planet also attributed the world-class surf, whale watching and coastal hikes in Australia’s South-West region.

Margaret River had more than 1.69 million visitors while Australia’s South-West region had about 3.37 million visitors in 2018.

Other entries which made the top 10 included Bay of Islands in New Zealand, the Cook Islands, central Vietnam, Fiji and Singapore.
