Tran still stopped in tracks over market

The Tran Veggies co-owner said he had been “going back and forth” with Subiaco Council since October last year.

“We would like Growers Lane to be a place of social gathering as well as grocery supplies,” Mr Tran said.

“We want to bring some life and soul back to Subiaco, and continue with the legacy that Station Street Market started.”

At a committee meeting on February 9, councillors deferred consideration of the change-of-use application to the full council meeting tonight.

Cr Stephanie Stroud said the City of Subiaco had received three complaints from nearby residents “in what is usually a very vocal area”.

“We are not talking about a rebuild here,” she said.

“The shops that this market would replace are retail, there is no issue with parking and it won’t interfere with neighbouring streets. We lost Station Street Markets, now we have a real void here. I see this as a very valuable addition. We need to encourage business into Subiaco. Let’s not complicate this.”

Cr Lee Hemsley moved the motion to defer, which was carried 8-2.

“This is a significant change of use,” Cr Hemsley said. “All councillors should have the opportunity to speak about it and there are three not here tonight.”
