CLAREMONT’S former Bayview Centre has become home to Western Australia’s first two-storey Bunnings store.

The $13 million redevelopment, next door to Bunnings’ former location on Leura Avenue, will open this Friday.

WA operations manager Shelley Begley said she was proud of the 5000sq m store.

“Claremont is the gateway to the western suburbs,” she said.

“The old store was there for 20 years, but we always wanted to a get a bigger opportunity for a wider range – we were hampered by size.”

Up to 70 staff from the previous store and 27 new staff will work at the warehouse.

Store manager Paul Marshall said Bunnings tried to involve local businesses with their opening weekend.

“They’re trying to make sure customers go through to Old Theatre Lane,” he said.

“For our opening events, we’ll have a table set up to bring people down the laneway.”

Long-time Bunnings administrator Fiona Sermon said she had worked at the original Claremont store for 22 years.

“The customers here are gorgeous – lots of people like to come in for a chat,” she said.

“We’ll have people coming in at 7am and lining up outside to get their potting mix every week.”

Ms Sermon said the old store was “homely” but she looked forward to a “fresh new beginning”.

Magicians, face-painting, balloons, bands and cooking demonstrations from WA food ambassador and chef Don Hancey are planned for the store’s opening festivities on November 6, 7 and 8.
