Group members are fundraising for their trip to the World Folk Festival in the US where they will showcase Aboriginal dance as well as share a cultural exchange with Native Americans and perform at the Chumash Native American Museum.

PLC indigenous scholarship program co-ordinator Tracey Walker said the dance group started out as a small performance at a Naidoc Week assembly and had since been invited to perform at a range of events.

‘The dance group really came about a few years ago when we had assemblies,’ Ms Walker said.

‘Year 11 student Ashlyn Hassutt (16) said the group allowed the girls to bond over their culture and had brought them all closer together.

‘You don’t really get to learn your culture at school being in a big city and being so far away every chance you get you might as well take it,’ Ashlyn said.

‘I think that’s very good we get to experience this and be connect with our culture as well.’
