Vic detectives chase rape case leads to WA

AAPWestern Suburbs Weekly

INVESTIGATIONS into the abduction and gang rape of a teenager in Melbourne more than three decades ago have led detectives to Western Australia.

Victoria Police has revealed officers travelled to Perth this week to make inquiries about that crime, and another Melbourne sexual assault in the 1980s which they believe is linked.

The first incident occurred at South Yarra in November 1985 when an 18-year-old school girl was dragged into a vehicle on Bray Street about 10pm.

She was bound, gagged and blindfolded, driven to an unknown property and raped for several hours while still blindfolded, before being dumped.

The victim died in 2008 and police are offering a $350,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction.

In March 1986, a 19-year-old woman was dragged off an East Melbourne street and abducted and raped in similar way before being dumped at Ringwood.

Detectives believe the two crimes are linked.

“Detectives travelled to Perth on Wednesday to make further enquiries in relation to the incidents, based on information that has been provided to them,” police said on Friday.

“At this time no one has been arrested or charged.”
