SPEED limits across Western Australia could drop by 10km/h under recommendations in by the state’s road safety authority.
In the consultation paper released on Saturday, the Road Safety Council says reducing speed limits by 10km/h could reduce road deaths.
Council chairman Iain Cameron said not only would lives be saved, but the economics would also “stack up”.

READ NOW“Keeping the major highways and the major freeways at the same speeds … will save fuel, reduces vehicle wear and tear and really only adds a few minutes to a typical journey,” he told reporters on Saturday.
Mr Cameron said a ten per cent slowdown on freeways and highways would result in a “33 per cent benefit” for the community.
The council has also suggested dropping speed limits by 10km/h on urban roads and some back streets.
The McGowan state government has distanced itself from the proposal, saying speed limits would only be reduced if the community demanded it.
“Imagine zero serious trauma on our roads, and tell us what you are prepared to do in order for WA to pursue the same goal,” said Mr Cameron.
The council will hold community forums throughout the state over a three-month period. Western Australians can also provide feedback online.
