A WEST Leederville cycling team is hitting the pavement to support people living with neurological conditions in WA.
The Beyond Bank Beauties recently met Leigh Harris, an MSWA member and Jane Brook resident who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2013.
The women will be riding together and cheering each other on in the upcoming MSWA Ocean Ride.
Mrs Harris said when she was diagnosed, her neurologist encouraged her to live a normal life.
“In a way, the diagnosis was a relief as it gave me an explanation of the way I was feeling,” she said.
Mrs Harris said life since has been a journey of discovery – figuring out new ways to get back to the activities she loved, finding out how supportive her husband Bevan is, and that life doesn’t stop when you get MS.
The pair started riding together on a tandem bike so Ms Harris didn’t have to worry about gears and brakes, and are set to take on the 30km course for the Ocean Ride on November 26.
“We’ve done the 10km for two years – it’s a challenge to get to the 30,” Mrs Harris said.
“It’s getting better each time we ride.
“My husband and I get to exercise, have fun together, and raise money for MSWA at the same time.”
Mrs Harris and the Beyond Bank Beauties are excited to hit this year’s course together.
Beyond Bank WA state manager Michelle Coelho said it’s the group’s third year in the Ocean Ride, but first year riding in support of an individual.
“It’s so exciting to join forces with Leigh,” Ms Coelho said.
“We see ourselves as part of the community and the community as part of us.”
