THE Western Suburbs Weekly has received the Community Newspapers of Australia National Best Newspaper Award for the third consecutive year.

The highly decorated publication won the Best Newspaper 30,000-50,000 category in the southern division and then took out the national prize, which it also claimed in 2013 and 2014.

It was one of two national awards claimed last Friday in Melbourne by the Community Newspaper Group, Perth’s biggest suburban newspaper network.

Perth City Style, a 24-page collaboration with the City of Perth to showcase shopping in the city, won the Best Advertising Feature category and was praised for its great balance of editorial, striking photography and inspiring full-page advertising.

Photographer Jon Hewson topped a successful campaign for Community Newspaper Group by winning the southern award for Best Sports Photo.

Judges said the Western Suburbs Weekly had “a nice blend of news and lifestyle editorial which is laid out creatively and with a pleasant style”.

“Excellent photos, good stories and clean design add up to a very complete package,” they said.

Editor Denise Cahill said the Western Suburbs Weekly continued to go from strength to strength.

“We’ve been recognised by CNA for the past four years and we strive to give our readers better content and design each year,” Ms Cahill said.

“It’s an exciting year for us with the newspaper relocating to Claremont in the next few months to be part of a thriving retail and commercial hub.”

Of Perth City Style, judges said: “A contemporary and inspiring advertising feature displaying great design through clean lines, fresh colours, and simply typography… Simple, stylish and effective.”

Judges described Hewson’s award-winning silhouette image of a motorcross rider in full flight as “impeccable use of light and shadows… Art and sport melded into one.”
