Lisa ThomasWestern Suburbs Weekly

SUBIACO’S Lords Recreation Centre will raise money for mental health by taking part in Youth Focus Fit30 this month.

A team of gym instructors, office staff and customer service officers will complete 30 minutes of exercise every day for 30 days of September to raise funds and awareness for youth mental health, with Youth Focus.

City of Subiaco Recreation Services manager Cheyne Cameron said he was pleased Lords could support such a worthy cause.

“There is a strong connection between mental and physical health and we’d like to encourage everyone we can to get involved,” he said.

“Exercise in any form, whether a gentle walk or vigorous gym session, can help release endorphins in the brain, to increase energy, a positive mood and mental alertness.”

Community members are also invited to take part by joining the challenge, donating to the Lords fundraising page or by raising awareness.

Youth Focus chief executive Fiona Kalaf said the demand for services such as counselling, peer support and education programs were ever-increasing.

“Sadly suicide remains the leading cause of death for Australians under 25,” she said.

“By taking part in the Fit30 challenge participants will be playing a key role in raising awareness of youth suicide within the community.”
