Reader congratulates CNG for reporting on Local Government Reform, council amalgamations

MY congratulations to reporter Jon Bassett on his excellent reporting and editorial on the farcical, dishonest and wasteful council amalgamation process.

I have shared all this material with community groups all over the metropolitan area who are rising in protest against this massive waste of time and resources and the Premier, Minister and Local Government Advisory Board who brought us to this ‘bugger’s muddle’.

It was ill conceived and poorly managed from the start. It has cost many millions and will cost many more millions.

It started as a ‘reform process’, allegedly to do with efficiency (for which no evidence has ever been forthcoming), and has ended up as a dog’s breakfast in Simpson’s hands, complicated by Premier Barnett’s last-minute thought bubble of a ‘Capital City’ and an Act to achieve this.

It is being roundly criticised by the Nats, Labor and even some senior Libs and communities across Perth, while being praised by the Property Council who admit they were always advocates for amalgamation to facilitate development.

We also see the Labor Party jumping in saying they are ready to train the new generation of political party-aligned councillors who will be in the mega-councils.
