SAM and Kane Williamson thought of just about everything when they built this house in 2016.
They purchased the block with an early-1970s home in 2010 and lived there for five years before building.
“This provided an invaluable understanding of the solar and wind aspects of the site, which were major considerations through the design phase and influenced many of our final material selections,” Mrs Williamson said.
For example, the home has a skillion roof over the kitchen/living/dining area and the sun pours in through the glass stacking doors, keeping the home warm and light in winter.
The angle of the roof also restricts the sun in summer keeping the house and floor cool.
The house also has an abundance of storage space, from a carpeted attic with power, airconditioning and internet connection and mezzanine floor in the garage to plenty of cupboards throughout.
The backyard includes an edible garden area with herbs and fruit trees and the outdoor area is framed by trees.
While it is a cleverly designed home, it has also been a great family home for the Williamsons and their two daughters.
Mrs Williamson said the open-plan living/dining/|kitchen area with polished concrete flooring and bi-fold doors to the adjoining family room was the place they spent all their time, from cooking together, listening to music and enjoying a good red by the Regency fireplace in winter with friends to setting up the TV area like a theatre and watching a movie.
The living area opens to the entertaining area with dado wall, silver birch trees, climbing fig, low-maintenance composite decking and exposed aggregate flooring.
Mrs Williamson also loves the downstairs master bedroom and said it felt like a calm retreat or sanctuary.
It has a walk-in robe and ensuite with a freestanding bath, walk-in shower and double vanity unit.
The children’s bedrooms are upstairs, along with the family bathroom with floor-to-ceiling tiling, large bath and a shower.
The Williamsons enjoyed the design and building process and are moving on to a new project.
