THE location between the river and the sea drew owners Brigitte and Phil Cronan to this two-storey home on a 475sq m block in a quiet cul-de-sac.
“As exercise enthusiasts we loved being able to walk along the river and beach,” Mrs Cronan said.
“Our children were educated close by, so being near the train lines was fantastic.
“We also loved the closeness to Fremantle and the lifestyle that it offers.”
Mrs Cronan said another benefit of the location was the Fremantle Doctor; it meant they rarely needed to turn the airconditioning on.
The home was built in 1995 by then local artist James Down and his wife – he painted a floor-to-ceiling mural of a tropical aquarium in the entry.
Mr and Mrs Cronan have lived there for 21 years.
“When we moved in, Matilda Bay Brewery was a functioning brewery and every Christmas they would leave all the locals a basket of beers at their front door,” Mrs Cronan said.
The home is ideal for family living, with a formal living room with a river outlook, formal dining room, study and open-plan family/meals/kitchen area on the ground floor.
Mrs Cronan’s favourite space is also on the ground floor.
For many people this is a living or alfresco area, but she said it was the five-car garage.
“It is massive; it currently houses both of our cars, our off-road camper trailer and home gym,” she said.
“I also love the back garden.
“We have many native birds that visit, including a special family of New Holland Honeyeaters.”
The backyard also includes a paved, covered alfresco area.
The bedrooms, bathrooms and another living area are upstairs.
“In 2010 we added a master bedroom suite with large walk-in robe, ensuite/powder room and spacious balcony above the garage – this gave us a fourth bedroom and a separate master suite,” Mrs Cronan said.
“It was done by Dale Alcock Home Improvements and was a finalist in the HIA ANZ Perth Housing Awards.”
The upstairs living area also opens to a balcony with a cedar-lined ceiling and views across the river to Leeuwin Barracks, Zephyrs and East Fremantle.
“We love watching the Rottnest Ferry and other boats go past every day,” Mrs Cronan said.
She said the house had been a special home and they were reluctantly downsizing.
