BUILT in the days when workers’ cottages where the norm, this home has grown and matured with the years.

Owners Andrew and Deb White said the vacant land was originally purchased in 1918 by builder Francis James Robbins who built the original home and then sold it to the War Service Homes Commission on December 30, 1919.

“The home has undergone several renovations in the ensuing 99 years, the most significant of which were performed 10 years ago with the addition of an ensuite to the main bedroom, a new kitchen, a renovation to the second bathroom and extensive remodelling of the interior,” they said.

“At the same time the gardens were thoroughly landscaped including limestone and feature iron work, paving and the planting of hedges, which have since matured into beautiful examples of how to achieve privacy with greenery.

“Most recently, we have added an alfresco living area opening from the family room, with a veranda of matching design to the original part of the home.”

Mr White said the original builder, and indeed all subsequent owners, would be very proud to see how the humble seed they sowed and nurtured had matured into one of Subiaco’s most desirable properties.

The home is a superb example of a renovated character home.

External features include tuckpointing, turned veranda posts and a corrugated iron roof.

Inside, it has wide jarrah floorboards, stained glass windows, high ceilings with ornate cornices and gorgeous fireplaces.

The front of the home includes the master bedroom with huge ensuite and walk-in robe.

The ensuite exudes old-world glamour with black and white tiling, clawfoot bath and marble benchtops.

The layout leads past a second bedroom, the formal dining room and receiving/music room (this is the Mr White’s favourite room and houses a 6-foot baby grand piano) to the newer part of the home.

“The home doesn’t really have views except perhaps for the family room,” Mr White said.

“After living in Paris, where our apartment had a view of La Tour Eiffel, we find it oddly satisfying to see the tower of Sir Charles Gairdner hospital with its red flashing lights reminding us of the Eiffel tower’s lights.”

The family room opens to the new alfresco area with Terrazzo flooring, built-in outdoor kitchen and rear veranda.

There are two more bedrooms and a second bathroom at the back of the home.

The home also has a two-car garage off a rear right-of-way where Mr White kept his 1932 Ford ute, carport, solar panels, reverse-cycle airconditioning and security system including a camera to monitor activity at the front gate.

Mr and Mrs White intended 135 Gloster Street to be their home for retirement.

“After working for 40 years we did retire, however the challenges of work, and the excitement of property development have returned and we are selling to achieve our property development aims.”

They said Gloster Street was a great location, close to public transport, coffee shops, convenience stores and super markets and with a lovely community fee.
