BARKING Gecko Theatre Company chief executive Helen Hristofski and her family have lived in this renovated cottage for three years.
“We were attracted to the warmth of the home and its various living spaces and courtyard,” she said.
“The working open fireplaces created a cosy atmosphere in winter and there is plenty of space inside and out for our two small children and dog.
“We loved the period features along with the practicalities of the modern renovations and off-street parking.”
There are three bedrooms at the front of the home, including the master with built-in robes, fireplace, ensuite and french doors opening to a pretty porch.
The layout leads past a formal lounge room with fireplace and french doors to a courtyard with ivy covered wall, pergola and garden bed.
It was Ms Hristofski’s favourite room and she liked to sit here with a book.
“I could still hear the rest of the family out the back from this semi-private room with beautiful natural light on both sides, so you’re snug inside while connected to the sky and garden outside,” she said.
There is also a bathroom/laundry and study nook before the home opens out into a spacious living/dining/kitchen area.
This room has slate flooring, pitched timber ceiling, feature brick wall and fireplace, industrial-style spotlights and a skylight.
Ms Hristofski said it was like living in a stylish French barn and was a room with many memories.
“My favourite memories are as a family in the back room,” she said.
“We have a large table which we ate at, played games at, the kids learnt to read and write at (we chose not to have a TV out there), and opened Christmas presents at.
“There were 1000 cups of tea drunk with friends out there or I’d rustle up something to eat.”
Many of the home’s rooms open to the outdoors and there is a covered alfresco area off the main living area and a covered barbecue area with built-in bench and trough that is ideal for year-round entertaining.
While the home is an “exquisite gem”, the location on a 349sq m block has also been delightful.
“Walking to Kings Park with our boys and dog was one of our favourite things to do on a Sunday,” Ms Hristofski said.
“Living amongst Subiaco’s vibrant community is so convenient, and the primary school is one of the top three in the state.
“Each weekend it becomes an awesome fresh produce market and the community gathers to shop, eat, drink coffee and catch up on the week’s events.”
