DESCRIBED as a home fit for a king, the 2019 Master Builders-Bankwest Housing Excellence Awards Top WA home is reminiscent of a medieval castle where boulders merge into stone walls.
The oceanfront residence in Injidup Springs Road, Yallingup has a formidable exterior which echoes the hilltop strongholds of Europe.
This impression is reinforced by a heavy, studded double front door leading to the interior with features including huge wooden exposed beams and a tightly wound tower staircase.
It is certainly a fortress of sorts, built to endure in a coastal environment.
Master Builders senior judge Robert Shaw said the work by Paradigm Construction was made to last.
“The complexity of the stonework and renders and changing textures from one surface to another is great to see,” he said.
“The attention to detail with the different finishes has shown unbelievable craftsmanship.”
Master Builders executive director John Gelavis said the winning home was a superb example of the work done by WA builders and the prestigious awards event allowed the industry to put its high standards of workmanship on show.
The home, designed by celebrated architect Javier Barba – BC Architectos in Barcelona has been cleverly angled to cascade down the existing sand dune, giving it protection from prevailing winds and its soft curves and thick stone walls reflect the surrounding granite outcrops and beaches.
While it is a magnificent design, Mr Shaw that the awards were not judged, on design but on quality and skill.
The excellence of these was shown when the project not only won the titles of Top WA Home and Best Country Home but also a collection of trade awards for plastering, ceilings, plasterboard linings, brick and block paving and external finishes.
“Paradigm Construction are well deserving of being the state winner,” Mr Shaw said.
“The team should be very proud to deliver this sort of project on a regional and a remote site where the logistics can be difficult.
“To achieve consistency on a project like this, which is not run-of-the-mill, is impressive.
“They have delivered a level of workmanship which is fantastic.”
Other major winners include Domination Homes which received Best Display Home for The Residence, Applecross.
The modern two-storey, four-bedroom, two-bathroom home has multiple living areas including a theatre room, open-plan living/dining/kitchen area with wine cellar and upstairs sitting room with office space.
It features wood finishes, the finest natural stone and a tranquil outdoor relaxation haven, centred on water features that infuse elements of nature into the home.
Outdoor and internal living come together seamlessly thanks to frameless glass bi-fold doors, creating the perfect entertaining area.
The Residence was also named best display home over $800,000.
Best alterations & additions was presented to Rossbrook Construction for a its renovation and extension of a heritage-listed Highgate home.
The project also took out the best alterations & additions $400,000-$500,000 category.
The home was built in 1898 at the height of the gold rush period, Rossbrook Construction’s carefully planned and meticulously executed renovations and additions included a sympathetic and clever solar passive design.
Recycling the jarrah timber floors and original bricks in the additions has created a wow factor that extends throughout the 120-year-old house with a stunning and complementary liveable back area now a source of pride.
The WA winners will compete against the best of other states and territories at the Master Builders national awards at Uluru on November 23.
