NEDLANDS resident Helen Williams says Australia will be targeting a top 16 finish at October’s World Mixed Curling Championships in Champery, Switzerland.

Williams said she was excited to make her second appearance at the World Championships where the green and gold is grouped with powerhouse Canada, England, Germany, Andorra, Holland, Poland and Turkey.

“We look forward to being competitive and hope to make the top 16,” she said.

“Last year we had some very close games and were able to compete at that level but it would be nice to win a few more games (this time) and qualify out of the group stage.”

Williams will follow up the World Championships by skippering Australia at the Pacific-Asia Curling Championships in New South Wales in November.

It will be Williams’ first Pacific Curling Championships appearance since 2005 after she took a break to have children.

Also on the Australian women’s team is Victorian Kim Forge, Leeming’s Ashleigh Street and Herne Hill’s Michelle Fredericks-Armstrong.

“It’s very exciting to have three WA curlers on the national team… especially Michelle who learnt to curl last year and Ashleigh who’s 19,” Williams said.

“Personally, it’s so exciting to have another opportunity to play competitively again after a 10 year break.

“We’d absolutely love to take first or second place. Our goal is firstly to finish in the top four.”

The squad is preparing for the championships at the Cockburn Ice Arena in Bibra Lake.

Williams said facility management had been very supportive, painting rings into the ice and preparing a fast curling sheet.
