Golfers recall good old days

Cullen, who turns 100 next month, won the 1937 event at Royal Fremantle Golf Club and defended his title a year later at Lake Karrinyup.

The Sydney resident got a traineeship with professional Eric Alberts at the WA Golf Club, Mt Yokine (now Yokine) after leaving school at age 14.

When the club relocated to Cottesloe, he recalled riding his bike from Tuart Hill to Cottesloe on mostly unsealed roads.

Cullen helped the Cottesloe club celebrate its centenary in 2008 but will be watching the WA Open that runs from October 16 to 19 on the GolfWA website (www.golfwa.org.au).

Ryan, who edits the club’s publication, said the most exciting thing about 2014 would be the young talent on the course.

‘Oliver Goss has just turned professional this year and Curtis Luck is our club champion, state champion and was runner-up at the amateur championships this year,’ he said.

‘It will be interesting to see how Curtis goes on his home course.’

Entry to the event is free.
