Gridiron: Claremont Jets looking for new coach to take them to championship

CLAREMONT Jets Gridiron Club wants to avenge its junior grand final loss of last season and needs a new coach to get there.

The club’s junior team recovered from finishing second last on the ladder in the 2014-15 season to make the grand final this year but lost to Rockingham Vipers.

The McGillivray Oval-based club needs coaches for its junior and senior teams for the 2016-17 season.

Jets coach of 10 years David Holmes, who led the juniors to the grand final, said coaches needed to be enthusiastic about educating players.

“It’s a very hands on type of coaching because most Australian kids and players don’t come from a gridiron background,” Holmes said.

“There’s an emphasis on teaching the skills and really focusing on those throughout the season.”

Four of the clubs players – Will Beevan, Calin Flood, Ben Metcalfe and Lachlan Poor – play for the Australian team.

Juniors train on Tuesdays and Thursdays and seniors Mondays and Wednesdays.

Matches are played on Saturdays.

Pre-season training starts in July and the season begins in October.
