THE Australian Islamic College in Dianella had 12 Year 7 and 8 teams competing in the Multicultural Netball Carnival at the State Netball Centre yesterday.
The Netball WA initiative in its second year attracted 38 teams and more than 400 participants from more than 60 nationalities.
College physical education teacher Erin Holds said most of the students had played netball before but some were out on the court for the first time.
“It’s an opportunity to come and mix with other students and other schools and get out and have a bit of fun,” Holds said.
“It also breaks down barriers and myths about Islam and what Muslims are like.
“Lots of the girls are making new friends.
“They’re so excited and have a great time even though they’re losing.”
The Office of Multicultural Interests has supported the carnival for players in Years 3 through 12 for the second year.
