THE inaugural Under-11 Girls Cricket Competition started on Friday evening with a derby between two Wembley Districts teams at City Beach Oval.

Matches are played in the Twenty20 format and are all about participation so girls face an equal number of balls.

Wembley Districts’ Yellow team went out to bat first while Red took to the field.

The fielders were put to the test as Yellow found some gaps in the field.

Red showed that their early season training was paying off and the bowlers showed great consistency.

Yellow was quick in the field in the second innings but players were challenged by Red’s enthusiasm for running between the wickets and having a swing at everything.

Wembley Districts president Margie Oldfield said the girls played in high spirits with great attitude and sportsmanship.

“It was fantastic cricket,” she said.

“If these young girls are our future – cricket is in good hands.”

Girls Under-11 matches are played every Friday from 4.30pm at City Beach Oval.
