Perth Netball Association introducing male netball competition

Denise S. CahillWestern Suburbs Weekly

PERTH Netball Association (PNA) will introduce Friday night boys and men’s competitions next season.

The competitions for secondary school aged and open teams will provide a pathway for male netball players who can currently only play at PNA until Year 6.

The move follows the introduction of a men’s division in the annual Association Championships and male divisions being included in the Metro League from 2020.

Australian netball player Jason Heard started playing the sport in high school but was only able to compete in school competitions.

“After high school I tried out for the state team but even then you train for months and go away for a month-long tournament,” the centre court player said.

Heard was part of the Australian under-23 men’s netball team that beat New Zealand 3-0 in the recent world series.

People interested in nominating a boys or men’s team for the 2019 PNA season should call the PNA office on 9387 7011 or email pnacompetition@perthnetball.com.au.

Formal expressions of interest will be sent to interested parties and existing clubs in late January.
