Anthony McDonald and David Locke have started a new swim squad with a focus on fun.

David Locke, of City Beach, and AJ McDonald, of Doubleview, launched the RedSharks Swim Team late last month with 30 swimmers aged from eight to 14.

Locke, who won the surf race in the 40 to 44 age category at the Australian Masters Surf Life Saving Championships just three weeks before the launch, said the sessions were for swimmers who had not done a lot of squad training and wanted to be part of a social club that focused on fun rather than serious swimming.

‘Every second Friday we run our own competition so they can strive to do PBs,’ he said.

‘It’s getting their toes in the water before school and surf carnivals so when they get to those events they won’t be so nervous.’

The business partners have five children between them, aged six to 11 who are part of the club.

While the duo’s have coaching accreditation and experience, Locke’s background is in surf life saving and McDonald swimming and water polo. The RedSharks take part in three one-hour sessions a week from 7 to 8am.
