Toni Farnworth of Perth Lynx offers insight into approaching WNBL

Hello everyone!

I am Toni Farnworth, guard for the Perth Lynx and it’s my job through this column to give you an insight into our campaign for the 2017-18 WNBL season.

With our first regular season game fast approaching, the past weekend was a big one for the club.

We jetted off to Burdekin in far North Queensland with our full squad (minus import Courtney Williams who is still on WNBA duties) for two preseason games against the Townsville Fire.

After flying into Townsville on Thursday night and making the short drive down the Bruce Highway through the sugar cane and ‘snakey’ grass, we arrived in Burdekin ready to put our pre-season work to the test.

The game that evening was a hot affair with numerous lead changes and a lot of sweat spilt on the court.

The game came down to the final few possessions, with Townsville coming out on top 83-82.

The second game was also a tight one, though we lost 76-88.

It was a great weekend for our new recruit Alice Kunek who top scored in both games, with all other new players contributing and getting valuable practice in our fast-paced style of play.

Personally the trip was bittersweet; it was great to finally hit the court with a new group of teammates, however after a heavy fall in the first game I went to bed that night with a sore wrist.

Following a sleepless night and a trip to the local hospital with our team manager Darrell Morgan I found that I had sustained a fracture.

The team is now back in Perth for the final two weeks of training before the season kicks off for real.

Please get down and support us in our first home game against the Sydney Flames at 1pm on the Sunday 8 October at the Bendat Basketball Centre.
