Birt, who is now retired and playing for the Claremont-Nedlands Cricket Club, ran a free cricket clinic in Swanbourne last week for children 6 to 14 to teach them the benefits of the sport.

Birt said the clinic was about getting kids outside away from the TV and their iPads.

“It’s a great opportunity for kids to have fun, spend time outside and learn from professionals,” he said.

“It’s something free for kids to take part in over the holidays and a chance for us to give back to the community.”

Almost 100 children took part in the free clinic.

He said he saw a number of local and talented younger players shine during the clinic.

“Out of the kids who participated there could possibly be a few who could be playing for the Warriors in 10 years time,” he said.

Birt said he was enjoying playing local cricket again with top-of-the-ladder Claremont-Nedlands

“I captained the side the past two years, but have taken a step back this year and am just playing,” he said.

“We’ve got a good blend of experience, with a lot of older experienced players and some talented younger players coming through.”
