The 18-year-old Swanbourne resident said he surprised himself when he took out the overall gold medal to be named Youth World Champion last month.
“After exams, I had all of December to train, so thankfully it was just enough,” the Scotch College graduate said.
“It’s a pretty crazy competition, it’s compared to a mini Olympic Games.

READ NOW“I did quite well at the beginning, which means that even before the last race, I had won the regatta. It was a pretty cool feeling going out on the last race, because no matter what I got I had already won.”
Young said he trains at Fremantle Sailing Club and Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club in Peppermint Grove.
“The Olympics are my ultimate goal,” he said.
“Now that I’m 18, I’ll be moving into racing with the big guys, starting the senior stuff.
“Honestly, I expect to be around the bottom, but I will chip away and get back to the top. It’ll take a few years.”
