EDGEWATER Formula 3 driver Calan Williams has moved a step closer to his F1 target by signing with UK-based Fortec Motorsports for the 2019 Formula European Masters.

Formerly known as the FIA European Formula 3 Championship, the event is an open-wheel single-seater motor racing championship held across Europe.

The 18-year-old, who won the 2017 Australian F3 Championship, will start testing with the team in coming weeks, with the first official test for the series on March 25 and 26 at Misano in Italy.

The championship will start at Hockenheimring in Germany on May 3.

Last year, Williams also raced with Fortec Motorsport in the Euroformula Open F3 Championship.

Calan Williams has signed with Fortec Motorsports for the 2019 Formula European Masters.

Williams said the championship had a huge international profile, with race weekends attended by an average of more than 70,000 spectators, and most current F1 drivers had progressed through this championship.

“I am incredibly excited about the year ahead with my team Fortec Motorsport,” he said.

“I know I developed a huge amount in 2018 during my first season of Formula 3 in Europe, and with the experience and solid recent results in New Zealand I am feeling prepared and ready to go.

“I am very grateful to Fortec for the opportunity, especially to Mick Kouros who has developed me greatly as a driver.”

Kouros said Williams had “developed really well in the short period of time”.

“We are of the opinion the Formula 3 European Masters is the perfect race series for him, as the series offers him the chance of shining on an optimum platform in front of the eyes of the manufacturers involved in DTM racing,” he said.
